Protecting vulnerable groups

With a focus on reducing harm related to gambling, the group emphasizes the urgent need for regulatory changes. They argue that limiting gambling ads will create a safer environment, particularly for individuals susceptible to addiction.

Following ireland’s lead

Northern Ireland is looking south for inspiration, as the Republic of Ireland has already taken proactive measures to address this pressing issue. The call for action aims to align Northern Ireland’s policies with its neighboring country, ensuring a unified approach to reducing gambling-related harm.

Ireland enforces stricter gambling advertising rules

The Republic of Ireland has introduced the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, implementing more rigorous advertising regulations for gambling operators. This landmark legislation restricts advertising on television, radio, and select online platforms between 5:30 am and 9 pm. Additionally, social media advertisements are now confined to targeting only existing followers of the respective gambling companies.

Empowering the newly established Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, the reforms enable the authority to dictate the timing and frequency of advertisements. Moreover, there is a strong focus on safeguarding minors, with the outright prohibition of ads that could potentially appeal to children. These comprehensive measures aim to foster a more responsible gambling environment across the country.

Northern Ireland lawmakers urge stricter betting ad regulations

The All-Party Group in Northern Ireland is voicing concerns over the UK’s gambling regulations, arguing they fall short when compared to the stringent measures implemented in the Republic of Ireland. The group highlights that, while UK laws prohibit advertisements targeting children, broader regulations need enhancement to tackle the normalization of gambling through sports betting ads.

Key advocacy points:

  • Prioritize protecting vulnerable groups;
  • Align British regulations with Irish standards;
  • Promote societal wellbeing amidst increasing gambling exposure;

Chairman Philip McGuigan has underlined the necessity for revisiting the current legal framework. Meanwhile, Vice-chair Robbie Butler criticized Northern Ireland’s lag in adopting similar protections and urges the government to take swift action to safeguard its citizens.
